The Project
HLM recently completed the new Whitehorn Hall student accommodation at The University of St Andrews.
This phase of the project is part of the largest single expansion of student bedrooms in St Andrews for over a decade. Delivering over 400 new bedrooms in total across two new buildings situated within the grounds of the existing category B Listed University Hall, on a highly constrained site within the Hepburn Gardens Conservation Area.
The Product
Kilsaran Pembroke paving blocks were chosen to reflect the tone and nature of the project. Bringing a dynamic energy to the courtyard elevations.
Our Pembroke block further accentuated by the use of solid masonry and polished concrete products throughout the new development.
The Process
The product selection process was based on a palette of grey brickwork and polished concrete sympathetic to the tone of the adjacent sandstone buildings. There was a focus on projecting concrete bays to give prominence to common living spaces to highlight the façades and bring life to the open spaces that surround the building.
The design of the external spaces evolved by working closely with the client and students to understand the needs of the people who will use the space.
